Pass with Care: Memoirs is a transgender memoir-in-essays told through

the process of becoming a writer. Author and artist Cooper Lee Bombardier has been performing and publishing about his experience being trans for two decades, during which time the trans community—and the world’s awareness and acceptance of it—has grown in ways unimaginable to prior generations.

Told through an annotated collection of essays, performances, interviews, and lectures, Pass with Care contextualizes the act of transition and changing identity as something that is as much shaped through the act of writing about it as through any physical and social transformations one might undergo.

Featuring forewords from Susan Stryker and Morgan M Page, Pass with Care invites the reader to see how gender identity is always already in flux and (re)formation rather than static and immovable. Pass with Care traces trans history through the lens of one trans life in the arts, offers a bridge between trans generations, celebrates trans elders, and reveals a unique reckoning with what it means to become a man today.

COOPER LEE BOMBARDIER is a writer and visual

artist from the South Shore of Boston. He has been a

construction worker, a cook, a carpenter, a union

stagehand, a bouncer, a welder, a shop steward, a

dishwasher, a truck driver, and a house painter, among

other things, for a paycheck. His writing appears in

many publications and in 12 anthologies, such as The

Kenyon Review, Ninth Letter, CutBank, Nailed Magazine,

Longreads, BOMB, and The Rumpus; and recently in the

Lambda Literary Award-winning anthology, The

Remedy–Essays on Queer Health Issues, and the

Lambda-nominated anthology, Meanwhile, Elsewhere:

Speculative Fiction From Transgender Writers, which

won the 2018 American Library Association

Stonewall Book Awards Barbara Gittings Literature

Award.

The Huffington Post named him one of “10 Transgender

Artists Who Are Changing the Landscape of

Contemporary Art.” Pass with Care is his first book.

PRAISE FOR PASS WITH CARE

“In these clear-eyed, intelligent, intimate essays, Cooper Lee Bombardier writes fearlessly

and profoundly about gender, identity, and class. Whether examining the loneliness of men,

the fierceness of the dyke community in 1990s San Francisco, or the intricacies of his own gender

transition, Bombardier leads with curiosity and vulnerability, unveiling a story of possibilities and

resilience, and shining a light on a self who has learned “how to make freedom.”

A much-needed, wonderful collection.”

—Carter Sickels, author of The Prettiest Star

"Cooper Lee Bombardier's Pass with Care is a memoir of becoming, an essay collection

as layered and lovely as the life it describes: from working class kidhood to nineties dyke utopia

to life of letters, I cheered this hero on at every turn."

—Melissa Febos, author of Whip Smart and Abandon Me

“Cooper Lee Bombardier’s Pass with Care is much more than a memoir...often breathtaking

in its beauty, sexy and funny even as its observations cut deep.”

—Jonathan D. Katz, a pioneering figure in queer studies in art and culture, a professor,

writer, curator, and long time political activist responsible for the first

Smithsonian exhibition on queer art.

“Cooper Lee Bombardier writes from the heart about childhood and physical presence, work,

romance, love and friendship...Transitioning from butch female to male, Bombardier discovers the

fraught meanings of masculinity with open eyes. Pass with Care is an insightful trans memoir. It’s

also a brilliant book about ambivalence, class in America, self-acceptance, discovery.”

—Chris Kraus, author of Summer of Hate and After Kathy Acker

“Cooper is deep, he searches, he travels, relates through different forms,

different voices, an emotional gravitas as the only constant. He works to separate the ever

changing issues of being a complex person with the ever changing experience of being trans...

Pass with Care is moving in both senses of the word.”

—Sarah Schulman, author of Maggie Terry, The Cosmopolitans, and Conflict is Not Abuse

“Blessed are those who get to watch a man become a man on the page and feel pride and joy at his

offerings in Pass with Care. Each sentence is a story, entering room after room of shed skin and raw

truths tethered to the squared problems of language imposed on trans bodies. Bombardier’s

moxie, grace, kindness, and ferocity as a writer and thinker are unmatched and lasting.”

—Sophia Shalmiyev, author of Mother Winter

“Cooper Lee Bombardier’s tender and fierce writing brings class and gender,

art and life together with big heart and tough intelligence.”

—Michelle Tea, author of Against Memoir and Black Wave
