Larry R. Collins, "Remember Me" now available at East End Books Ptown - 389 Commercial Street. A striking book filled with art, photographs and a special interview "Ocean Camp" conducted by Eileen Myles at Larry's art studio in Provincetown.
The art featured in the book & exhibition at Amarillo Museum of Art was created from 1968 to 2017 when Larry was between 22 and 72 years of age.
"The photographs taken when I was a soldier in Vietnam during the war may be the most effortless artworks I have ever created, whereas the paintings (2009-17, with one exception from 1970) may have been the most difficult and yet, they are of one subject. At first I did not consciously consider the photographs to be artworks in their own right. I expected at best that I might use them as source material for paintings after the war. It was only in hindsight that I could see that they were as carefully composed as any paintings I had ever done.
The paintings have coincided with my attempts to understand the destruction brought to my own life by war and the very deep psychic loss it can exact from a person. Indeed, this exhibition is dedicated to those boys I knew in Vietnam who did not come home as I did. I have struggled with several of these paintings for 2 or years each, not from perfectionism, but in seeking resolution." - Larry R. Collins
